What is ROC?
On August 11, 2004, my mother succumbed to breast cancer and in April of 2008, I was delivered the news of my sister’s diagnosis of the same disease. Cancer has affected my family directly and my fight with the disease has now become personal. According to an analysis of 4,500 case studies by the American Institute of Cancer Research, physical activities like running may reduce the risk of cancer. While I was already a recreational runner, I felt it was time to up the ante, so I undertook a training regimen focused on running and adopting healthy eating habits. My goal was to get into prime physical shape in order to participate in running events and promote cancer awareness. With this site, I hope to further that goal.
ROC is an online hub for the latest news and research information on cancer. The content will also feature posts on physical fitness and wellness as it relates to cancer prevention. We hope you find the information helpful and appreciate your time spent on the site. Be a ROCstar and run over cancer.
Inspiration
ROC is an ardent supporter of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, which serves as a contributing source of inspiration to start the ROC site. We all know Lance’s story – the trials and tribulations of an amazing cyclist who was sidelined by cancer temporarily, only to come back and win the Tour de France a record seven times. Visit the foundation’s Website for more information on how to get involved.
Along with my mother, my sister has provided me with the will to promote cancer awareness. Aside from being an accomplished scholar with a doctoral degree from Harvard University, she is an astounding individual who is battling against Stage III breast cancer. Despite the physical and emotional pangs of cancer, she is unwilling to let the disease take control of her life. Please visit my dedication page for my sister and add your name in support of her fight against cancer.
